If you’ve ever asked someone for style suggestions (especially when the weather is in between seasons), you’ve probably heard, “Dress in layers.” It sounds easy, right? As someone who has struggled with layered looks turning me into a giant, squishy marshmallow who happens to be wearing a cardigan, I’m going to say it’s not as easy as it seems.
I love layered looks. I’ve scrolled past them on social media and thought to myself, “I have something like that in my closet. I could totally create that look.” And then I go to the closet, pull out what I THINK are the right pieces and pile it all on, feeling pretty good about myself. I walk to my full-length mirror (secret: it’s one of those ugly $5 ones that Wal-Mart sells to go in your dorm room–yeah, I’m a real grown-up) and take a look.
Slender, long, lean layers? Negative. How about bulky, bunchy, marshmallow-y. I look like Joey in the episode of Friends where he wears all of Chandler’s clothes. “Could I be wearing any more clothes?” (If you just finished that quote in your head then we’re basically soul mates.) Honestly, it’s just not a good look. It took me a while to figure out this little trick, so I’ll save you from that frightening moment where you look into the mirror and see yourself looking like a marshmallow stuffed into what was formerly a cute cardigan.
That’s the secret.
Sleeveless sweaters underneath a cardigan/sweater will keep your arms from feeling bulky and restricted, but will still help you to achieve that layered look. If you’re worried that you’ll be cold, pair it with a heavier cardigan or add a scarf for extra warmth. Of course I don’t always wear sleeveless shirts with my cardigans, but I feel a little more polished when I do.
If you want to give it a try, here are a few suggestions:
